How much does it cost to install grab bars?

Grab bars are the most common aging-in-place job remodelers do, and the cheapest structural fix in the bathroom. A stainless bar costs less than a dinner out; most of an installed price is labor and finding something solid to screw into.

National price ranges

Grab bar, installed

DIY or professional, per bar. Parts only if you do it yourself: $20–$33. Source: Fixr: How much does it cost to install grab bars?, August 29, 2025 (typical range).

$85–$300

Fixr: $85 to $300 per bar installed, average $248; labor alone $30 to $60 per bar. DIY bar-only price from Home Depot 24 in stainless bars ($20 to $33).

When it is worth it

  • Anyone who holds a towel bar, sink edge or shower door to steady themselves: those are not built to take a person's weight.
  • Beside the toilet if getting up takes a push with the hands.
  • Inside and outside the tub or shower, per NIA's room-by-room guidance, before any bigger bathroom project.

When to try something else first

  • You can only mount it with suction cups. Suction bars can release without warning and are not grab bars.

What moves the price

  • Wall type: tile and fiberglass need special bits or anchors; drywall over studs is quickest.
  • Whether studs line up with where the bar should go. If not, a pro adds blocking or uses rated hollow-wall anchors.
  • How many bars: a handyman visit for three bars costs far less per bar than three separate visits.

DIY or hire it out

If you can find studs and drill tile, a bar is a one-hour DIY job. Mount horizontal bars 33 to 36 in above the floor (the ADA benchmark) and use bars of 1¼ to 2 in diameter.

Tax note. IRS Publication 502 lists this among home changes that usually do not raise a home's value, so the cost can count as a medical expense if you itemize and total medical costs pass 7.5% of adjusted gross income:

Adding handrails or grab bars anywhere (whether or not in bathrooms). (IRS Publication 502, 2025)

Where this shows up in the home check

Keepstead suggests this fix when one of these checks fails. Run the home check to see whether it is a priority for your home.

  • There is something solid to hold while unlocking the door (entrance and steps)
  • There are grab bars inside and outside the tub or shower (bathroom)
  • There is a grab bar or safety frame beside the toilet (bathroom)
  • The step from the garage into the house has something to hold (outdoor and garage)

Frequently asked questions

How many grab bars does a bathroom need?

Usually two to three: one beside the toilet, one on the tub or shower wall, and one at the entry to the tub. NIA recommends bars on both the inside and outside of the tub or shower.

Does Medicare pay for grab bars?

Original Medicare generally does not. Some Medicare Advantage plans include home-safety benefits; check the plan's Evidence of Coverage. VA HISA grants and some state Medicaid waivers can cover them.
