Outdoor and garage: aging-in-place checklist

Walks, driveways, decks and the garage step get the least attention and the most weather. Cracked slabs, wet leaves and an unlit path from the car are the usual culprits.

The checks

  1. Walks and the driveway are even, with no cracks, raised slabs or loose pavers

NIA: make sure steps and walks to the door are not broken or uneven. Tree roots lift slabs a little every year.

Medium priority if missing. Usual fix: repair raised or cracked slabs, $240–$330 (pro). Source: National Institute on Aging .

  2. Paths, deck and porch are kept clear of leaves, hoses and branches, with ice-melt ready in winter

NIA advises keeping outdoor areas clear of debris and treating walkways with ice melt or sand in winter.

Medium priority if missing. Usual fix: set up a clearing routine (no cost), Free (DIY). Source: National Institute on Aging .

  3. The step from the garage into the house has something to hold

Garage steps are often steep, unlit and taken with full hands. A grab bar on the door frame is a quick fix.

Medium priority if missing. Usual fix: mount a grab bar at the garage step, $85–$300 (DIY). Source: National Institute on Aging .

  4. The path from the car or garage to the door is lit at night

NIA suggests turning on the porch light whenever you will return after dark. A motion light does it automatically.

Medium priority if missing. Usual fix: add a motion-sensor floodlight, $350–$500 (pro). Source: National Institute on Aging .

  5. Deck and back-door steps have a sturdy railing

Back steps often get no rail at all. NIA advises non-slip material on outdoor stairways too.

Medium priority if missing. Usual fix: add a railing, $300–$1,380 (pro). Source: National Institute on Aging , U.S. Access Board .
