How much does a walk-in tub cost?

A walk-in tub has a watertight door and a built-in seat, so there is no wall to climb over. The catch is that the door only opens when the tub is empty: you get in, close the door, fill, bathe, and wait for it to drain before getting out.

$3,500–$10,000

Fixr: $3,500 to $10,000, average $6,000.

When it is worth it

  • Soaking matters for comfort or a medical reason and the person can sit safely while it fills and drains.
  • There is room and a water heater big enough to fill it quickly.

When to try something else first

  • The aim is just safe bathing: a low-threshold shower usually costs less and is quicker to use.
  • The person gets cold easily or cannot sit through the time it takes to fill and drain.

What moves the price

  • Soaker only versus jets and heated seats.
  • Quick-drain pumps.
  • Water heater upgrade and electrical work for jetted models.

DIY or hire it out

Not a DIY job.

Tax note. IRS Publication 502 lists this among home changes that usually do not raise a home's value, so the cost can count as a medical expense if you itemize and total medical costs pass 7.5% of adjusted gross income:

Installing railings, support bars, or other modifications to bathrooms. (IRS Publication 502, 2025)

  • Getting into and out of the tub or shower needs no high step (bathroom)

Frequently asked questions

How long does a walk-in tub take to drain?

It depends on the model and drain; ask for the drain time in writing and look for a quick-drain option.

Is a walk-in tub tax deductible?

Possibly, as a medical expense, to the extent it does not raise the home's value and your total medical costs exceed 7.5% of adjusted gross income. Ask a tax professional.
